I see lots of western/west coast plates. Midwestern states are probably the second most represented (at least where I live). It seems like most people get their plates changed quickly though and the others are often military plates.

In Fairbanks I saw a bunch of Washington and California plates. On the drive to Anchorage yesterday I passed a truck with Virginia plates.

On a side note, I see a ton of Alaska plates here in Missouri. I'm guessing most of them are in the military or used to be in the military and are keeping the AK plates because of tax and inspection reasons.

If you see a blue PT Cruiser with VA plates that's me!

This map is fascinating and goes a long way to answering the question.

Clicking on midwestern counties fascinates me; those people don't go ANYWHERE.

You know it's illegal to not have proper, AK registration within 30 days of moving here, right?

This is something newbies here are really big into doing - moving here and then keeping their old license plates instead of paying the registration fees in Alaska*. The hell? If you like your license plates from Gooberville so much, keep them and don't move here.

*then of course 18 months later they complain because they didn't qualify for PFD or resident fishing license since they didn't do any of their paperwork on time.

I'm well aware of that. Unfortunately my title is still in storage as the cost of moving my goods here was significantly higher than expected and I didn't think to get the title out first. The DMV won't let me change the registration without the title.

FYI - I've been in Alaska for four years so take your condescension and stuff it in your arse.

As a thought - Why not just fill out a duplicate title/lost title request form. Then you don't have to go back for it.

Personally, I don't care whether you change them or not, just trying to help you find a solution.

AK has a different way of doing plate registrations then I am used to. (had to look it up for myself, so I know what to expect). State fees and then your borough/city/village fees. The plates are good for 2 years and you don't take your plates with you when you sell... Of course I make the initial outlay back fast, as one of my car payments drop (leases have taxes on the payments here) and my insurance rates also drop.

Unbelievable I know, but as high priced as Anchorage is, it is cheaper than Miami.

The law does not make an exception for people with poor planning skills.
