Hey everyone,
I am a college student and will be moving to AK this summer. My family has been going up for some time now, and we actually have a cabin up there. (My grandfather knows everyone it seems lol)
But I will be working instead of leisurely fishing. I was wondering if anyone had any local info about the summer happenings or best wifi spots, etc? ( I think I was there during the 4th of July, does that "parade" still happen?

I will greatly appreciate any info!

If you think you want to travel in rural Alaska and the second thing you ask about is wifi, you might just consider staying home.

If you must know, I wont have cell service and will only have the internet as a source of communication. If you don't know the situation, don't be rude. I am going up for work, and there ARE places with wifi, I just dont know them all.

All you have to do is go to WalMart and get one of the prepaid phones. It'll work there. Lots of seasonal workers do that.

I don't mean to be rude and I doubt Mizzle was trying to be rude either. More helpful in trying to give you the information you need to be prepared - If your situation requires a WiFi connection, then "rural" or "remote" by Alaskan definitions is not for you. You can get a very expensive internet connection (satellite), but it is like dial-up speeds and isn't "portable". (well, it could be, but not realistically)

The bigger AK cities (other than Anchorage, I would call small US Cities anywhere else) tend to have at least spotty cell and data service. Most of the hotel/motels I stayed at did as well. (and even ones I didn't stay at, but were near gas stations did, because my iPad picked them up when we were gassing up) And this is coming from someone accustomed to un-interupted 3G/LTE service in a large metropolitan lower 48 City.
