living in a dry cabin
I will be moving to Fairbanks and am looking for housing. I was curious what population of people lives in dry cabins? Is it unacceptable for someone in business/professor/university employee? Do most of these people get to work early and shower everyday?
Also any suggestions on places to look for housing would be appreciated (have been using craigslist and newsminer websites).
Thanks!

No to the non-specific first part of the question, because not all business/professor/university employees go to work early, and no to the last part from simple observation.

I can't be the one to say, ......my idea of 'socially acceptable' won't necessarily reflect that of others.

If you are going to be living in a dry cabin, you should be able to find access to a place to shower.
How often you do that probably shouldn't be of any difference, or of any less concern than how ever often you shower now.

There may be one or two that do that. I have no idea of the Universities policy on such a matter. Some may even go work out at a local gym and shower there first thing every morning. And some may utilize a laundrymat with showers. And then there is the good old Navy shower. Get a pot of water hot on the wood stove and bathe right there next to the stove. Heck I know people that have running water and they still don't shower everyday.

If they had one, which I highly suspect they wouldn't,
(too invasive into personal habits, not something usually condoned in policy matters),
....but if they had one, ....I'd sure love to see how they worded it.

I was not fortunate enough to attend a university. Do they allow staff to show up early and shower? Maybe in this state they do.
If nothing else you can contact somebody there and inquire further?

Wherever they have the facility to accomodate that, I'm sure they do.

Can't help on the where to look for housing...quite a few university staff/students live on the north side of University Ave towards Farmer's Loop...others that I know of along Geist towards Chena Pump. That being said, it IS hit or miss depending on what you want. Luckily (somewhat for buyers/renters), housing prices have supposedly leveled off and are somewhat in a decline. Place still can be expensive, though. Best bet for the housing you're looking for...colleagues at the U.
Now...I know friends that have lived in dry cabins (yep, even university staff). If you smell or think you might be getting a little funky, might want that shower. That is about the sum of it.
Now, they might even have staff specific environs if that is what you're looking for...but the Student Recreation Center at UAF looks to be rather nice (need such for our winters imo). Rec Center website even lists showers as part of the perks.

If your part of the staff... http://www.alaska.edu/bor/policy/4p/p04-06.html
Housing for Faculty and Staff P04.06.080
Housing or a housing allowance will be provided by the university to the president and chancellors. Housing will be reserved by the president for administration and staff personnel as provided by regulation.
