Good evening everyone. I am being transferred to the Juneau area with the US Coast Guard. I will actually be on the CGC Liberty out of Auke Bay. I was wondering if any locals can give me information on the area. I don't have any specific questions, but any info about schools, roads (in the winter), best area to live, ect. would be greatly appreciated. And, if you are wondering, I am moving there from the great state of Arkansas. Thanks again!
I live in Auke Bay, it's a great, scenic area and the elementary school is top notch. Housing is tight but it all depends when you are transferring. In the fall, availability is best and costs for rentals are a little less. There are some apartments/condos that come open fairly often in Auke Bay and rental houses in the area as well. Craigslist or contact some of the property management companies in the area. My wife is from Arkansas and has adjusted very well.
Craigslist scammers are easy to spot. If the price looks too good, it's a scam.
Thanks everyone for the replies. I will be coming up in about 3 weeks to try and secure housing. My wife and kids will follow in September or October. If anyone has any other tips for us, we would love to hear them!

Talk to the Coast Guard personnel office. They are the ones you are going to work for, and the ones who can give you the correct information about housing.
It's hard to find a nice area in Juneau. I lived downtown and thought it was OK, except in summer when there are too many tourists. North Douglas was great except for the helicopter noise (in summer as well) and the cacophony of gunshots at 4am when the bird refuge opened for hunting (fall time I think, but I can't remember). I wasn't interested in the Valley because that's where all the people were, ha. I bet Auke Bay would be all right except for the driving to work part.
If I had to live there again I'd probably choose as far out the road as I could get.
