Glad your closer to Alaska now Paul. The nice thing about Anchorage is that it is only an hour or two away from Alaska, depends how fast your plane is or if your Driving.

Well the Weekend I tried to sacrifice the Tundra to the Tanana river gods I flew to the lake. Then went for a ride from there. I was on the trail I had been using all winter the snow had melted off the Bar (north side of the river) so I was going to just ride out on the ice where there was another trail that had been used all winter. I try to stay on the bars even in mid winter. Rode down the bare bank and into a trap the ice and snow just gave way and the front of the machine went right in. I couldn't pull it out up hill. my options were walk back to the cabin about 7.5 miles, get the plane and come-a-long fly back then I would still have another 7 mile walk back to get it. Option 2 walk to the lake barrow a neighbors machine and a pull the tundra back to the lake. That would be one 7.5 mile walk. Option 3 Cell phone worked from that spot call a buddy to fly out with rope come-a-long from town and yank it out. the 3rd one was the easiest thanks to good friend! It only took about 15 min to pound a deadman in and pull it out. Rode back to the cabin. I won't be going back till after the ice goes out on floats.

So, this weekend I have 6 days off in a row, I havent seen ANYWHERE in Alaska yet,
other than Safeways, work, and Flat Top.... I am thinking of going on a long drive,
then whenIget to thinking such things my mind invariably gets carried away and I
wondered if I could even get to the lake and back?
What if I spent a day driving from Anchorage to Manley, and then another day hiking
the 25 odd miles to the lake? Spend a day on the lake, and then hike back and drive
back (could it all be done in 5 - 6 days? I'm fairly fit and VERY foolhardy - the perfect
combination???)
What do you all think?
Is it still snow up there? Or has it all melted?
I could buy a GPS in Anchorage on Friday morning and go for it.
I know this posting will get a few responses along the lines of:
"You will die horribly...", but that's okay. I don't mind dying
on the way to something cool. It's dying in the line at the
supermarket I want to avoid...

It has been mentioned that Anchorage is just a short airplane ride from Alaska. (But did you notice the "airplane" part? Not "car"!)

Get on a plane and visit Barrow or Bethel or Kotzebue. Six days would be a great visit. You might try setting up something to visit a smaller village too.

And if nothing else, it would give you a vastly improved perspective on your employer and on the people you serve there! (I have a daughter who also works for ANTHC in Anchorage.)

Come up to Fairbanks I have to work this weekend but I could show you around town alittle and fill you in on the lake. It is not a good time to try to walk in. It would take more than a day to go that 25 miles.

I do hear a lot of wonderful stories about Bethel and Kotzebue from
the patients.
But planes are much more expensive than driving.
I'm staggered that the Native population will rally to be with a sick
relative - 30 people sometimes, flying in from Nome or Barrow...
It must be a huge expense for them, but it just reinforces how
family oriented they are (something Westerners could learn a great
deal from...)
I'll definitely check out a plane trip somewhere soon, but right now
I'm on a bit of a budget.
It is sadly true that the road accessibly places only hint at what lies
beyond.

Are they? Six days of driving is awful expensive!

The cost of a round trip ticket even to Barrow is less than $500 with ERA when they start their new service. I'm not sure what AA is charging right now, but it would be more than that.
