In the winter, I'd plan around 8 hours. You could use the train. It goes up north from Anchorage on Saturday and back from Fairbanks on Sunday.

Slower. It's 12 hours by train.

Thanks for the link. That ride looks pretty cool though getting to pass through those little towns. The 12 hours could be well spent on the train.

If given a choice between driving for 8 hours, or taking the train for 12 hours, there is no doubt in my mind that I would prefer the train, especially during the winter.

Alaskan drivers are notoriously bad, and I would be focusing too much on the road to really enjoy the scenery around me. The train may take 50% longer, but I will wager that you will be less exhausted by the end of your trip.
