Default info on Kaktovik

Anyone have up to date info on Kaktovik? We are missionaries looking to go there in the future. Maybe some pointers on churches and housing?

Everything you wanted to know and then some. Are you sure the locals want any missionaries coming up there? I used to feel so sorry for the poor LDS missionaries in Barrow. No doors opened for them and they said I was the only one that even talked to them. Well, being the good police officer that I was I thought that 2 guys in suits and ties looked out of place walking the streets of Barrow....

just checking the water so to speak....I don't wear a suit. I look more like Santa without the suit. I'm just an everyday guy working for the Lord. I understand there is an empty church...I can't stand to see that. "Do they want a missionary" I'm sure there is someone praying for the church to continue!

If the church is empty there is a reason for it. You need to first indocrinate yourself into all things Inupiat. Then you can change your beliefs to fit theirs. You sound like you have good intentions but you need to understand most Alaskans don't take to kindly to strangers coming into the community and trying to change things....

Kaktovik is the village that owns the company I work for. Really nice people, with a forward loooking council. Only one store as far as I know. As an outsider, coming into the community with an eye towards missionary work, I have to say that the Inupiat watch newcomers closely, and your actions will speak more than any words. They have been misled by experts from the oil companies, the state and the federal governments, not to mention several denominations (not least, my own Catholic church). I would plan on a very slow start if any in these villages you have mentioned here on CD. Most, not all, maybe, want to be left to their own devices in remote villages and towns. You might have a different experience than mine, but I have been to all of the North Slope villages, and on many occasions, not just once.
