I'm considering retiring in Alaska. I left here (there) in 2002 and i've been homeseick for it since. I can't see snow without missing the state where I left my house. I'm a single Mom to 2 young kids (early elementary) so at this point in my life it's not a good idea to be thousands of miles away from family and my support system, but once my kids are older/ on their own, I hope to move back and stay for the rest of my life...

I definitely will be retiring in Alaska in a few more years. Despite the highest cost-of-living in the nation, I can't think of any place else I would rather be. I used to live in southern California, and the perpetual summers drove me nuts. I learned that I need a change of seasons, and the winters in south central Alaska are not nearly as extreme as you might think.
Could I retire elsewhere and pay a lot less? Absolutely! But then I believe that one gets what they pay for, and the price of paradise doesn't come cheap. For my own "spiritual" health I need to live among the forests and the mountains. If that means enduring some additional hardships, then so be it. |

I am considering becomeing a roadbird, Spend the winters in Southern Alaska and the summers in Fairbanks where it gets nice and warm!. Have my snow and warmer weather, still enjoy the nice summers, and not owe my soul to AK AIR.

Can you believe its raining here now? Been at it for a couple days now on and off. We had almost five feet of snow on the ground in most spots with berms higher than the house and 24 hours later it's down to bare roads and sheet ice with a sea of slush all round. The stuff on the roofs is so heavy that it's taking out exhaust stacks and chimmney pipes even though they've got ice splitters, a house down the road lost two pipes when the whole flashing just came down. Sounds like mortar shells hitting when a big chunk slides off the metal roof, "whump"..."whump"...
Gotta switch the ice cleats off the Sorels and get the Xtratuffs back out. ![]() |

I am hoping to be a seasonal resident. I lived in Fairbanks and had more than my share of winters, but there is no place like it for June and July. Sold my house there in Oct and hope to get a condo there this spring. I can't see it becoming a retirement hotspot. The winters are too long.

I believe southeast is the warmest climate. Therefore...any of those southeast towns will have the "hottest" girls.
