you guys really do hear it over and..over,i bet most of these guys never made it out there though.
if youre trying to get a position over the internet, youre obviously not serious...who would hire someone theyve never met, never seen, that theyre going to have to live with? thats common sense.
showing up shows your hunger,it shows youre serious i came on here researching what harbors were my best bet i found some good information a link is in my "moving to alaska" thread and some good answers from people here. i'd hate to get there and come off as a crazed DC fan, hopefully showing up for Salmon season will take me out of this category. from the look of it showing up period will lol! Peace,Blake

Here's another suggestion for something a lot safer than deep-sea fishing yet still let's you go out to sea (I know how that gets into you blood!). Also pays very well. As oil and gas becomes depleted onshore and in the shallows more and more exploration is going on in the deepwater. Seismic surveys do "ultra-sounds" of the seabed down 3 or 4 miles to locate oil and gas traps.
You need either a geology or electrical engineering BS or possibly Assoc.(2-yr) to start but several have indicated a willingness to get a little college training. A party chief (5yrs or so doing surveys) can get well into the 6-digits salaries. Most work on a 6week-2m on/ 6week-2m off schedule with two 12 hr shifts per day. They like to hire ex-NAVY or other marine-experienced personel as it's a lot easier to teach an experienced seaman a little geology and electronics than entice a landlubbing science nerd to go out to sea! I did this sort of work during summers my college years and several as a young man in my 20's and early 30s. I have a friend still doing them in his 60's so it's not the intensely physical and dangerous work as in fishing or crabbing, but you still need to watch your step setting out and picking up gear from the deck esp in the Arctic (where a slip might mean death). Lot's more work shifting up that way - last great frontier!

You'd have to get a work visa. Then you'd need a sponser. I don't think you can just fly here and go to work.
