In Fairbanks you at least have a chance of getting a cheap cabin (minimal amenities!); no such luck anywhere near Anchorage as far as I can see. I left 5 years ago, but my job is taking me back, so am looking again myself. Very hard with a dog.
I did find a decent cabin (again, minimal amenities, but did have running water) in Big Lake, which is 60 miles north of Anchorage.

Please remember that it can be hard to just pick a place and assume you will be able to get a job nearby.
