Every once in awhile here some wolves are shot for no reason...it's sad because the numbers are getting up to a positive state & then some idiots w/no purpose go & shoot them just for the hell of it. Poachers, I hate poachers.

Ever been to Point Hope?
Let me assure you the village elders are not shielding criminals.
They might well be protecting the rights of innocent people in their community though, by insisting on due process rather than some kind of a witch hunt.
Village elders have a long history of insisting on fair treatment. When there was good evidence that a number of crews were killing walrus in the Bering Straits for their heads, the village elders set up the mechanism to catch them and provide evidence that put them in jail. They also have done thing like the famous "Duck in" here in Barrow many moons ago. You should do a web search of "Sadie Neakok Duck" and be amused.

Well, there actually is another story very much like it, except the people who did it didn't become famous otherwise, nor were they particularly able to write it down in English.
But it is a fact that in Kwigillingok about 50 years or so ago there was something pretty similar happened. I don't remember exact details, but seems the either a Marshall or a Game Warden of some kind told everyone they were going to be in big trouble for hunting birds in the spring.
He also complained about the bullet holes in his airplane... They arrested and locked him up in a smoke house. (I seem to remember something about them saying they would feed him either, but that's a bit foggy.)
They only let him go because Ray Christensen (spelling?) who was a State Legislator from that area, who lived in Bethel but was originally from Kwig, flew out there and negotiated his release.
