Hi! I'm totally new to this, but thought I'd give it a shot. I currently live in Wyoming and work for a major oil company, that shall remain nameless at this point. They have recently acquired a facility in/around Kenai, and are looking for employees that may be interested in working there. I've expressed an interest, however, never having been to Alaska, I need to know more information than what I can retrieve online. Things like, detailed climate information, economy, housing possibilities, you know, the general stuff. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. I've been reading all the postings I can on this thread, and enjoy the interaction/pictures/etc I'll be looking forward to any/all responses...

Rance,
Thanks for replying so quickly. Actually, I've been to 2 of those sites, but not the Borough site. I was looking more for a personal sort of information base. That stuff is pretty generic. In reading all of you guys' posts, I would rather have your type of descriptions. More heartfelt and not as sterile... Thanks again! |

Well the town (city) is located in a beautiful spot. Right at the mouth of the Kenai River, has some canneries and a good sized commercial fishing fleet in the summer. There is a small airport, a home depot, a handfull of bars and banks and churches and a couple good size grocery stores.
Weather wise all I can say is it's warmer than Sterling in the winter...and cooler in the summer because it sits right on the water. It can get fogged in winter or summer. I have 25 below this moring so I'm sure Kenai is zero to 10 below. I live 21 miles from Kenai, have never lived in Kenai, but have been around there for years. What we call North Kenai runs 10 to 20 miles out of town, is a fair sized industrial area. Lot's of oilfeild and everything that goes with it. Refineries, trucking, welding and fab, service companies etc and includes a dock for rig tenders (platforms and rig supply boats) and a couple heliports.

Rance,
Your description of Kenai and surrounding area was very informative, to say the least. That was exactly the kind of information I was looking for. One other question, though. Are the mosquitoes the size of VW's and do they come in droves? Being from Wyoming, I'm very familiar with mosquitoes, although ours are only the size of Geo's. Not to mention my acquaintance with cold. My town made national news the other day for having the coldest temperature in the lower 48. 32 below...Brrr! Thanks for the info, hopefully you'll relate more to me as details become available. :c) BTW...Do they sell sheet metal on Craigslist? User 2, Regarding the nameless company, therein lies my ruin. They may decide to keep/convert the employees that came with the acquisition, adding to with company employees from the lower 48. If all of the positions can't be filled via those two methods, then I would imagine they would post positions locally. So, all of my research may come to naught if a more senior individual applies...Anyway, I always wanted to make it to Alaska before expiring, so, if I secure the position there, my dream will be fulfilled. Otherwise, I guess I'm hosed. |
