They have less viruses because there are so few of them (relative to Windows-based machines) that virus writers don't feel it worth their while. Now If Barkingowl tom-toms the goodness of Macs and the whole of Alaska switches to Apple, that might change.

I run AVG free edition and Firefox with no problems and have never had an infected file come thru. Also if anyone wants I have a 52 page compiled manual for stripping bloatware from Vista. It is in word format. I won't try to guess how long it will take you to strip out stuff as I do for a living and it takes me less than 2 hours to completely tweak a system.

Actually, Apple used to have just as much trouble as Windows, but then they switch to a Unix based system which simply isn't going to have that type of security problem. And it isn't that nobody tries or would want to, because the Internet runs on unix. If someone could write a virus for unix it would shutdown the world. But that isn't going to happen.

There are a few viruses for Unix and/or Linux, just not very many and not very effective. Also, there is virus protection/detection software for Macs and Unix, McAfee is one and it's also the only one I will use for any OS.

I wish there was a smilie with holding a cross backing you off(evil spirits)...you must have the trick with McAfee...I bought that about 5 years ago and had the worst time with it, could not open anything without a flickin warning popping up...if it let me open it, plus for my work I am looking up medical terms, etc., all the time...learned how to use Google reliably (I think), as Google became my best friend, don't need so much anymore, but just looking at McAfee scares me...needless to say, I blew away and wrote the software off on taxes as a learning experience...

Yes, the newest versions can be a bit overly protective. I still use a version that is about 5 years old and as long as you keep the DAT (the file that has the virus names, sortof) up to date, all is good.
