I think you may have the wrong idea about Alaska, this isn't a minute-man state. Politically it is red but as others have said, it is more green-libertarian ("Your rights end at the tip of my nose" meets "get your plastic crap out of my bay") than true republican. "Conservative" and "liberal" doesn't mean much here, you can very easily find someone who is a pro-gun-ownership, pro-prayer in schools, pro-choice, pot smoking, long haired hippee.

I have to say political discussions I have heard or engaged in since moving here have NOT been very national in nature, but instead focus on local issues- increasing city sales tax for example, authorizing use of schools for other endeavors, etc.

If you want to move someplace where people fit a Ronald Regan conservative mold and everyone sits around and bemoans liberal policies in DC all the time, this may not be your haven. Try Texas.

This is accademically and socially as a total package.

All the years I lived there, Alaska was a live and let live place. No one ever pushed their ideas on someone else - not politically or religion-wise, anyway. It was always something local that heated things up.

Anybody remember the movement to secede from the Union and form the People's Republic of Alaska? Now, THAT was fun.
