Moving to Barrow from East Coast. Please, can someone tell me what I need to get installed in my car in order to be able to plug it in to an electric outlet and warm up the engine. I don't know what this/these thing(s) is/are called. Thanks!

I would sell my car before I move. Have you priced having it shipped?

You will have to winterize your vehicle (it should cost from $350.00 to $450.00 at a mechanic's shop in the East Coast):

a. Block heater
b. Battery heater
c. Oil pan heater
d. Antifreeze/distilled water mixture of 60/40
e. An arctic grade "Y" cord (short, blue extension cord with three outlets at one end)
f. A 25-foot or longer arctic grade extension cord

However, you better figure how you are going to get to Barrow, what house you are moving into, where you are going to work, etc., before winterizing your car. There are no roads to barrow.

Maybe the OP figured that he is not driving to Barrow, so he moved on?

Totally this, or keep it with a friend or family member, Barrow can be a bit much to new transplants and its nice to have a backup plan.

Best of luck with your move.

Thanks for your recommendations!

I'm not moving to Barrow for fun. I'm moving for work. After visiting, I've decided that I absolutely want to bring my vehicle from Prudhoe Bay via ship. I know the cost of shipping. I'll sell the car before I leave Barrow. Additionally, I'm bringing car parts with me, but I really needed the info about the engine heater, etc.

Do people in towns/cities in AK serviced by AK Airlines generally date people in Barrow, or is that an oxymoron?

Thanks!

People date people all over. If you can make it work out, you can make it work out.
I still think you are crazy (in a good way) for shipping a car up before spending time there), but we are shipping a car to Dillingham without having been there before (though we have lived in the bush for three years).

good luck. Have fun.

Something like the "airlines personnel servicing Barrowers"?

Maybe some Barrowers who have received such services can chime in
