These photos found their way to me (taken in Ontario and Idaho). Warptman, or Xa’at, or anyone who knows -- is a white moose ever seen in Alaska that you’ve heard of?
And is there any tradition among the Yup’ik, Tlingit, Koyukon, or others of a sacred white moose, as there is the sacred White Buffalo Woman of the Lakotas? Thanks ![]() Last edited by allforcats; 01-21-2008 at 02:45 AM. |

I'd have to look into it, I'll ask around or ask my parents tomorrow at some point.

We've had a couple right in Sterling over the years. One when I was in grade school we'd see everyday on the bus. And there have been a couple down around Kasiloff. They are rare but are very cool to see.

The one was a cow and had brown twin calves for a couple years running.

Albino moose are not necessarily rare. These are illegal to hunt in Alaska, not because they are "spirits," but because there are ongoing studies by F&G relating to such animals. We have black bears that live near glaciers, and these have a sort of blue tint on their hide. Some folks call them "blue bears" I remember seeing a couple of photos on The News Miner of an albino bear (black bear with a white coat).
