Default Cheapest way to get to Alaska?

I am thinking about travelling to Alaska this summer. Alaska seems to be a wonderful tourist destination but I found the air ticket is pretty expensive. It will cost me more than 800 dollars if I want to fly from east coast to Alaska.

Is there any cheaper way to get to Alaska?I have considered train...but later I found it impossible.

Thanks in advance!

On many of my drives down and up the Alaska Highway, I've seen many bicyclists traveling the highway. Might take a while to get here, but it is cheap. You can pack all your camping gear on the bike pull a bike trailer and do that route.

Have you tried some of the "discount" websites like Expedia?

Oh,yes,I have tried many websites including Expedia. It will be cheaper(650) if my destination is Anchorage. But my ideal destination is Fairbanks which will cost me much more(nearly 900 USD according to expedia)

I think there is an airline called suncountry that is fairly cheap. They fly out of Minneapolis for sure. YOu could train across the US then fly up out of Seattle maybe. Hitch hike or look for travelers coming north that may want to share a ride for a relief driver or something. Try craigslist etc?

Not entirely sure if this would be cheaper, but you could fly into Anch, rent a car, and drive to Fairbanks. Do you guys have "rent-a-wreck" up there?

You could take Amtrak to Bellingham, WA telling them you are disabled to get a 10% discount (they won't check to see if you are). Then take the ferry to Anchorage, and take the train to Fairbanks. I don't know how much the ferry costs though, or the Alaskan train, but the Amtrak shouldn't be more than about $250, and it's a pretty ride once you get past the Denver area.

Thank you guys! I have checked out Amtrak.Travelling by train won't help me reduce the cost actually. But If I can find a cheap way to get to fairbanks from anchorage, the cost will be lowered.
