Usually the skeeters aren't too bad here. The wind keeps them down. But, on some of these hot summer days when it gets to the 70's and the wind dies down, we have some bugs. Not too many days like that, though.

The biggest concern is the cost of living is really going up here thanks to the snowbirds. If not for the view, I'd move to Soldotna or somewhere that it's more affordable.

Edited to add: Up on Diamond Ridge where Kay Court is, there are more bugs than there are down in town.

Unless one happens to be afraid of volcanoes? That's the first thing I noticed at a distance (out in the ocean) to the right of the highway leading to Homer. I am not afraid of such, but made me think about what would happen to the Homer by the water when one of those puppies blows up.

You have Spurr, Redoubt, Illiamna, and Augustine Volcanoes on your right as you drive down.

Heres a shot of Redoubt back in the 80's

I was working on one of the offshore platforms. I even got some really good footage on vhs video one day as Redoubt erupted. I love those volcanoes. That whole coastline drive down to Homer is awesome.

I'd think that fishing & cheap housing don't necessarily go together. Are you going to look for jobs & housing before you get there?

Michele..Try searching "Craigslist" for housing, and show rentals . You can go to the housing/apt for the State of Alaska and do a search using "Homer" or use REALTOR.com - Real Estate Listings & Homes For Sale or www.alaskanmultiplelistingservices.com (broken link).

Jobs are posted at Craigslist or try the local newspaper in Homer.

Also on Craigslist is listing for real estate if you are considering purchasing.

Moderator, if its not permissible for me to show those weblinks please accept my apologies and edit.

Good luck in your search , Michele.

However do consider realtors photos not showing any exisiting problems next to the properties in the photos.
