Question Hubby wants to move to Alaska

We are from Maine, and it has always been my dream to move to Montana. Hubby wants to move to Alaska and get away from people (which is my goal as well). Since we will need to compromise i thought I'd see what everyone has to say about it up there. My husband cooks and I am in Insurance but have done many other jobs. Ideally we would like to live in a small town, say 4000 or less, preferably less and commute 30 ish miles to work (we are used to snow and cold and ice etc being from Maine) I also wondered what the job market is like, housing, etc. We are looking for a close knit community and "city sights" are not required (ie museums, movies, etc).

We are looking for a quiet place to build a small cabin in the woods and not spend every cent we earn to squeek by. I know it sounds like a pipe dream but I lived without electirc and plumbing a several years ago in a 16x16 room and was the happiest I'd ever been.

Is Alaska the place for me?

Rance - the pictures are absolutely beautiful. Looks like my kind of place.
Maine gets cold but obviously not as cold as AK. How are the jobs in your area? I travel 30 miles now. I am looking for a town of 35,000 or less to work in and a town of 4000 or less to live in. Any thoughts. I know Anchorage has LOTS of people but seems to be the"place", yes/no?

Like i said before i am new to the idea of moving to AK so I don't hve any clue as to what towns, housing /land prices etc.

Thanks everyone

The sizes you give are alot like the Kenai Peninsula towns. But work is another story. It's coming into winter and local stuff will be near filled. If you worked on the north slope you can commute on a 2 and 2 schedule. Alot will depend on what you do for work.

I am in Insurance presently but have done alot of office jobs, housekeeping, retail etc, and hubby cooks. Together we don't even make 45k here. What type of jobs are mostly there?

What towns on the Kenai Peninsula have @30k people? I was looking at that on the map last night and thought it looked like my kind of place.

To me, the summers make up for the harsh winter! We have been here for one full year-Delta Junction/Greely area- and it is beautiful. I loved the summer daylight.

To me, it's the HARSH WINTERS that make it. Why? Because the winters sort of weed out those who don't belong in Alaska, and they kill Mosquitoes too.
