Lodge employee mauled by grizzly while running on Kenai Peninsula trail | Alaska Dispatch News

Very sad, though the victim was able to walk for help.

That is amazing she survived. Many that survive have terrible, life changing injuries.

Sounds like bear spray didn't help. Hope the lodge workers had a few guns along with the bear spray.

Cottonwood Creek Trail is about a mile up the lake from our cabin. Been up there myself a time or two. It's spooky bear country. I sure as heck wouldn't be jogging up or down that trail without a sawed off shotgun. Worst thing is the trail runs along side cottonwood creek. It is so noisy from the water rushing down the mountain, that even yelling or jingling those tiny bear bells will probably never be heard by a bear unless you are standing face to face with one. The bear was probably just doing it's thing, hiding in the brush along the trail, and jumped at the chance to ambush some prey.

Bear attacks are so few and far between, sad that some people will use this as an excuse to go on the offensive.

The backside of Skilak is wilderness refuge. It's where bears thrive. Seeing a bear is to be expected. Being attacked is not. It's a risk one takes in just about anywhere in this state.

There are places where there are a lot of bears. You keep your wits about you in those places. Even then it can be hard to avoid. If Rance says that area is one of those places then those young ladies shouldn't have been jogging there.

Most of Alaska has very few bears. They are concentrated in areas where they have lots of food.
