To the OP. All depends on what you want to see, from scenery to places in the towns or cities such as museums, restaurants, and so forth.

I will chime-in in the areas of scenery. In this case what you want to do is to come to Anchorage and rent a car.

Drive down the Stirling Highway out of Anchorage toward Homer and Seward. In Homer you can take a boat tour. Once you have spent some time on the road and return to Anchorage, rent an RV and proceed as follows:

a. Drive out of Anchorage and take the Glenn Highway to Glennallen, then turn South on the Richardson and visit Valdez. There will be numerous locations where you can park and enjoy the view, or just pull off the road to cook a meal (or two), or just rest. In Valdez you can take a boat tour.

b. From Valdez travel North on the Richardson, to Paxon, and turn left on the Denali Highway taking your time along the way until you arrive to Cantwell (the Parks Highway). At this point you can decide if you want to go on one of the tours at the Denali Park, or just turn right on the Parks Highway on the way to Fairbanks, then from Fairbanks on the Richardson to Delta Junction.

c. Continue on the Richardson through Delta Junction toward Fort Greely and South toward Paxon. Long before Paxson, spend some time around the Rainbow Mountains (between Delta Junction and Summit Lake on the Richardson), and then Summit Lake. There will be numerous places where you can spend the night off the road along the Richardson.

d. From Paxon travel South on the Richardson toward Glennallen, and take the Glenn Highway back toward Anchorage.

Bring your camera (s) and several memory cards, one of two wide-angle lenses, and zooms, at least a 100-400mm lens. You will have plenty of opportunities to see wildlife (moose, caribou), and scenery.

Many Thanks to all of you....greatly appreciate, I have forwarded your suggestions to her.

I believe she is already looking into land tours....thought I'd ask you all, and forward the info to her, and let her decide. I don't know what kind of finances she is looking out to spend, so, by reading what you left me will help her decide....

Greatly appreciate your help...

First time we went out we saved up 10 grand. We spent 11.5 g's. When we went on vacation as a kid, it was do you want to do this OR that. I wanted to do this AND that, so we paid. 4 people right coast to AK= 5 g's. 2 weeks RV rental 5 g's. helo to the top of a glacier with dog sled rides $$, bear watching $$, etc.

Tell your friend to buy a Mile Post travel guide, plan out the trip and just drive.

AK is the most RV friendly place that I have ever been.

Another trip we did motels. it restricts your time. if you find something cool and you have to be somewhere else to get your room on time, that's no good.

The only bad thing about AK that I can think of is you have to watch your clock. Because of the daylight, you run and run. When it looks like diner time and you get hungry, it is 10:30 at night and the restaurants are closed...
