Alaskans have been calling it Denali for years. It's only a big deal to those scraping for reasons to cry about the pres.

I can't even remember the last time I heard anyone other than a tourist, or someone explaining something to a tourist, call it Mt. McKinley. The federal name change is well overdue, and brings it in line with local parlance. I have seen a lot of Outside commentary talking about PC madness or whatever, but it's not just Alaska Natives who call it Denali, but also native Alaskans and long-term residents. I do think it's right to use a Native name, though, given that the Athabaskans have the longest continuous human presence in the region.

I do not think that they should rename a mountain without at least the permission of those that live in Alaska, since they live there. The federal government shouldn't do that, especially if something as minor as the name of a mountain doesn't affect anything at the federal level.

I am glad that yall get to call it what you have always called it. If its called Denali up there then that is what its name should be. What I question is why people in Washington get to decide what you call it. Its not about Obama at all, in fact I think if anything he did the right thing by following the will of Alaska on this matter. My opinion is that if in Alaska the mountain is called and has always been called Denali then why does the federal government have the right to name it at all. From what I understand President McKinley never set foot in Alaska, so how did he get it named after him to begin with?

Among other reasons, the mountain is in a federal park.

The State of Alaska officially renamed the mountain Denali in 1975 and has been urging the federal government to do the same since then, if not before. Sen. Murkowski has tried to introduce legislation to change the name numerous times, most recently in January, which was shot down by Ohio's congressional contingent.

The mountain is in a national park so it would be the federal government's business as a matter of course. Apparently Alaska's congressional delegation has requested it be changed for many years, but the delegation from Ohio, one congressman in particular from William McKinley's hometown, has blocked it in committee since the 1970s.

True. And further more there was some meme going around claiming that Denali meant "Black Power" in Kenyan. The lengths of ignorance are scary.

Haven't seen anything on what Palin thinks of the change.
