What's it like living in Barrow?
Alaska is a place for those who are adventurous... and Barrow is one of, if not actually the most, adventurous place in Alaska. It's an every day, all day long adventure.
If you like to get things down to a nice familiar routine, where you can schedule what you'll be doing a week or two in advance and know that you've got it nailed... you will hate a place like Barrow! If you can't stand doing the same damned routine crap every day, and want to be challenged with fun things in life, Barrow is a good place!
It's a small community, and we all get along with each other in a way that just doesn't happen many other places. Your worst enemy will stop and help if you get stuck in a snow drift. There are no pockets of isolation (there are a lot Koreans here, for example, but there is no "Korea Town"). On a daily basis, everyone has no choice but to work with and deal with everyone else. You can't even go buy a newspaper without hearing 4 or 5 languages, maybe more, spoken here. And yet, everyone looks at everyone else as "my neighbor", and treats them that way too. It's a wonderful experience.
People seem to misunderstand a lot of what they read about Barrow. It isn't really all that cold and dark. If you want COLD, go to Fairbanks. Barrow is a moderated maritime climate. The average temperature in colder than anywhere in Alaska, but Barrow never sets any records for the coldest temperatures, and is
only the "coldest place in Alaska" on relatively warm days.
And, despite bordering on three sides by the ocean, rainfall is less than 5 inches per year, making Barrow a desert climate. If you do not like rain, Barrow is a great place (it drizzles in September, but it never rains from October through late May!
