I grew up in Kodiak; lived there from '53 till 68, than on and off for another 4 or 5 years. Can anyone tell me about the Kodiak of today? I left there in '73, just pre-pipeline, and haven't been back since.
I grew up on Woody Island, in an FAA compound, which the Lesnoi settlers managed to burn down. I wnt to Kodiak High School from 64-68. The island is beautiful, as is Kodiak, but I would be grateful for descriptions of how it is now. Not the Chamber of Commerce info please, I've been there, just the local knowledge would be great. I'd like to come up for a visit during the summer, my husband has never been there. As I get older the peace and freedom I knew as a child is waxing nostolgic in my mind. |

I don't know much about what Kodiak looked like when you where here but I will tell you how I feel about Kodiak from a newbie's point of view.
I moved to Kodiak in July and fell in love instantly. It is very beautiful here, despite the rain and gray days. Like any community they have a few social problems but nothing like the lower 48. Women can actully go jogging or walking early in the morning or late in the evening without worrying. The majority of people I have met here are friendly and happy to have new people in the community. I don't think I will ever tire of looking at the bay as I drive through town, the colors are always changing. Right now there are about 5 inches of snow on the ground and we expecting more. Everything looks like a winter wonderland. If you remember where Deadman's Curve is at it looks like a frozen waterfall along there and someone colored the ice, strange but fun too. Of course, everywhere you look right now you see eagles, on the buildings down town and all in the trees along the main road. Also, Sitka Deer are all along the road way and on the hillside. I'm sure it has changed, but it is still a very nice town and I don't think you could go wrong by coming back here to visit. |
