Default it may be a little gray

"it may be a little gray"...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! Xaat, what a joker...

Now I'm no Juneau expert, I've spent maybe three weeks in Juneau over three trips...but...it rained THE ENTIRE TIME, every time I've been there.

I've seen more blue sky in the last two days here in Haines than the entire time I've ever spent in Juneau. Maybe it's just me...

Uhmmm, might want to bring a waterproof jacket.

Warpt---I was looking into those portable bikes. Do you have one? Can you personally recommend it?

I'll second Warpt on the Medallion recommendation. I used to date a guy who worked for a few flightseeing outfits in Juneau and he worked on the Medallion program. It's important.

Oh, and btw...in SE...gortex is your friend!!!

I don't have a folding bike, but they look handy. I personally have a Cannodale SM800 and a Giant Mountain bike. My Cannondale is ancient, bought it back in '94 and the Giant this past fall, its sweet, has air forks on the front end and tubeless tires.

One more thing...this thought came to me last night while remembering the OP's title
"I don't want to mush on a glacier." While hiking in Juneau, I always run into interesting people (Alaskans) and strike up conversations. One of the guys I met along the way works for the operation that mushes dogs on the Mendenhall...he was spending his off day hiking, to get away from the tourons!! He said the mushing setup is kinda cheesy but it pays the bills. I also met a guy from Anchorage who was in Juneau for a few days: his blue grass band was playing a gig in town. It's great to walk around and meet people and strike up conversations. Alaskans are the best...really.

Oh yea...and the pizza place at the Wharf that Xa'at told you about....go there....there is a bit of a wait, but it's worth it.

I have a Giant Mountainbike too, but the front end is all stripped out and now my quick release front tire is no longer quick release so I figured it's time for a new bike....and I'd really like something portable instead of having to rent for ridiculous prices whenever I travel. But those portable bikes look kinda cheesy....like old folks bikes...

Just goto a bike shop near you and see what they have available. If they have a folding bike try it out for size. They have to be pretty handy. You are as old as you think you are and do not care what others think of you. I usually don't care what people think of me, most of the time. Telling people like myself that I'm a bit overweight doesn't get me mad. Now I'd be mad if you told me McDonald's or Burger King closed down or even KFC! Imagine yourself on a folding bike riding away from the tourist spots and doing your own thing, now thats a vacation worth taking.

Do you think that foul weather gear would be overkill?

I like talking to new folks, like y'all on this board for example. Honestly on the cruises that I've taken I really haven't met very many interesting people. Most of them are older in body, mind & spirit. They want to get to the front of every line like land manatees. They are rude & when you call them out on their behavior they stare at you blankly like sheep.

Pizzeria Roma? Sounds like a better dinner than whatever the ship has made for 2000.
