Shouldn't these jobs be offered to Alaskans first? There must be a terrific drain on the local economy.
Residents have no problem getting these jobs, so it isn't really a matter of outsiders coming in and taking them away from us. There simply aren't enough residents available to fill the positions, and most of us need a more sustainable income anyway.

- last week at 7:40 a.m. 2 degrees, -16 wind chill. a quiet, peaceful walk, great way to have morning coffee before the craziness of work....
Wow... that's a beautiful pic! Does Juneau slowly wake up to greet the day or is it all hustle & bustle like I suppose Anchorage would be?

It looks like you're in for some serious snow in Juneau today according to NOAA.

Do any of the summer folks stay on through the winter & if so what do they generally wind up doing to make ends meet?

The summer employees tend to be pretty adventurous types in the first place so a few of them do stick around, especially if they get out into whatever community they're working near...I've known a few who've found local love and stuck around, or got offered winter jobs.

no, juneau is very laid back in the winter. the hustle and bustle is during tourist season when the carpetbaggers open shop and we get all those damn "mystery meat on a stick" vendors going at it on the street corners.

It's jet black, although I suspect that will change, at least in part, after my hairstylist appointment later today...!
Danny- I dunno about today's snow, but wasn't yesterdays snow just the weirdest snow ever? I don't think I've ever seen such powdery snow- it was like you step in it, and it goes "pouf!" all around you!
Six days of snow seems excessive.
Barking- I don't think long underwear will be necessary. Our highs are generally in the 60s to lower 70s. A sunny day might put you in the mid 70s.

Danny...great pic! A clear winter's night in JNU...imagine that!

Barkingowl....I am certain your common sense is NOT that of the average touron, but I'll say this anyway...Do not, I repeat, do not, purchase or be caught dead in any of those "Alaska" tee shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, with moose, bear, various wildlife depicted on them. It's just tacky and a total tip off (in case you weren't wearing the white tennies) that you're a touron. Most people don't think that stuff is cool except maybe some lesser 48 weenies, who wear teddy bear sweatshirts and have their homes decorated in dried flowers and pictures of ducks and puppies. You get my drift.

As Met said---don't buy jewelery...all that cr@p is made in China or somewhere. If you do want to buy stuff...there are artists, local artists who live YEAR ROUND in AK. Seek them out!

Have fun. Listen to the peeps on this forum. They are awesome. Alaskans in general are very awesome.
