![]() Hello everyone! I just want to post this thread and see if I could get any advice!!! I am moving to Alaska in about two weeks and I have never been there before. The past couple years I have been moving around meeting new people and learning new cultures. I absolutely love it!! I decided on Alaska a month ago..and of course...none of my friends wanted to go!! Im trying to find that place that really makes me happy. I grew up in ocean city, maryland.....and in the winters..its a small beach town where everyone knows your business and in the summers it is crazytown!! haha I have alot of friends and family here....and love it..but something is misssing!! I lived in Aspen, COlorado for six months, Denver, Co for 6 months and Boulder, Colorado for 4 months. I love it there...but I want to try something new. I have heard great things about alaska and i definately want to experience it!! I have never been the hiker girl....and when we camp around here..its on a beach with a bonfire, campers or tents and wild horse s(on assateague island). I want to change that though....i have always been into sports...so i think i could handle the outdoorsy thing...without going to the extreme...I am a woman and all!!! I am going to stay in Anchorage at first(at a B&B probably) , but I wanted suggestions!! I am a 24 yr old female moving alone...just trying to find bar or restaurant work! Girdwood and anchorage are two places so far i think i would like. I am leaving my car(so sad) and all my things(which is alot..plan on having it shipped if i want to stay permanently. should I get a truck or suv when i get out there....any suggestions on that!! Also, best places to meet people??? I normally go to bars and meet people when i move somewhere new..but i have heard alot of sexual assaults in alaska and it kind of freaks me out! I am use to trusting everyone!! I definately want to meet people that will show me around and get me involved in the outdoors! Anyway..im rambling...so any help would be great~~~ Thanks, Ashley |

You sound like Girdwood material. This time of year they've usually got ads in the ADN for resort work. Here's Alyeska's site:

You'd probably like Denali in the summer as well. I have some links to lodges that hire summer employees and take online applications. I don't want to post them here for the whole world to see but I'll pm you with them soon. You're probably gonna want to stay away from anything too corporate. There's lots of opportunity for what you want to do. It's really a matter of checking some places out and deciding where you want to work. Quote:
Talkeetna is another good choice--and it's so small that you could get around for the summer just fine without a vehicle. About buying a vehicle if you decide to stay depends on where you end up living. The best truck I ever had was a tough little thing I paid a thousand bucks for that had been totally Alaskanized. And sometimes at the end of summer you can get good deals on vehicles from people who are leaving the state. Anyway probably sometime tomorrow I'll shoot you a pm with some job links for some of the better places. |
