Question housing rentals in Seward?

Hello everyone!

I am a merchant marine officer (ship's captain) that is seriously considering moving to Seward, as I have a good job prospect there. However, I am a family man and need to rent (a 2 or 3 b/r house) close to, or in the town to keep the commute reasonable. Are they available? Rare? Also, since I'll be negotiating salary, I'm wondering about the cost of living there. Any info would be much appreciated.

P.S.- I have no problem with the winters, daylight (or lack of it), etc.
I'm just concerned about available housing and economic issues of living in Seward. I know my family and I will love the location.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Muad. I live in Seward, and can tell you that there are (at the moment) a few rentals available. Winter is probably a good time to get one lined up, as once summer arrives, the rentals get filled by seasonal workers.
Cost of living here is higher than Anchorage and maybe even Kenai/Soldotna. We don't have natural gas here, so heating a place means you have to burn either wood, or fuel oil. Currently, fuel oil is running $3.32/gal...and you can figure using 5-7gal a day in the winter, for a 3br home. Food is maybe 20% higher than Anchorage, which in turn is maybe 20% higher than Seattle. (just a rough guess) Rent for apartments/condos runs about $600 to $900, and houses from there on up to maybe $1500/mo, depending on how ritzy it is.
Anyway, I'll give you a PM with some of the info I saw in the local paper on the 3br homes for rent.

Bud
Seward, Ak
