I've read this somewhere and also heard it, and I know it's not true literally, but just what percentage of people up there have their private pilot's license? It must be a bunch to become part of the folklore or whatever. Any thoughts or good stories? You there, Pitts?

And for those of you who responded to the thread I started when I came up there (and left), I'm now getting a good start on my pilot's license - will be heading to Colorado to a flight school, then hope to come back up there in the summer with license in hand. Things are working out swell for me, with a little help from my parents.

I got my pilot's licensed 20 years ago, but I haven't flown since. I didn't have the time or the money to keep it up... I wish I could've...

Here's this chart: Active Aviation Pilots (per capita) statistics - States Compared - StateMaster

That's an interesting chart. I live in #2 (MT) and am going to #3 (CO) to get my license. AK is WAY ahead of everyone else at 1.3 licenses per 100. Thanks for posting that.

I was surprised that Hawaii was not higher in the list.

But then how many go between Islands that often.

Seems like Hawaii would be really expensive to tie-up and no place really to fly, unless you like the sight of endless water below you. The mainland's just too far for most light planes.

A lot of people up here fly without a license, medical, annuals, etc. The FAA makes it really hard on pilots to stay in the air due to the all the regs. That's why a lot of people just fly anyways, why give up on a dream when you have a plane that will turn over and your not putting anyone else at risk.

I thought if you had a current license and medical, you could fly. Are you referring more to the required maintenance and all that?

I guess that's obvious, medicals and all are expensive, but do they ever get in trouble?
