And the cost of a Doctors office visit is insane in Anchorage. I can only imagine some of the other areas in the state.
Same up here. Even the poor people clinic is insane. I was once in tears because I needed to be seen and could not afford a visit at the clinic. I was on the bottom rung of the sliding scale and it was almost $100, which I did not have. And my electricity was about to get turned off. And it was in the middle of winter. And we all know a Toyo doesn't run without electricity.

They told me to go to the ER. That was their solution.

Being poor in Alaska sucks. So grateful to have a good job now.

I remember once when my son got bronchitis on the island, and we called 911 and got a recording.

I agree. I really like my doctor and everyone that works in her office is helpful and knowledgeable. I've heard complaints about Bartlett, but when my husband got very sick two years ago they took good care of him.

Juneau might attract people who want to actually live in the community rather than just these incompetent traveling quacks who want a vacation in Alaska. That doesn't mean that Juneau is a viable option for those who don't live there.

I don't think that anyone is arguing that Juneau is viable option for everyone to travel to. It's expensive to fly there from pretty much anywhere. I was simply pointing out that Juneau has decent medical care, in my experience.

If I needed medical care in this town and couldn't take care of it myself...I'd just wait for the jet and get outta here. After 30+ years there's not even a file with my name on it in the so-called clinic. Just offhand I can think of at least 6 people over the years who would be dead if they'd listen to the medical staff here.

School for doctors is what 8 years plus 2-3 years of residency. The real issue is the student loans they incure and no one knows what the political climate will be in 10 years when you first start.

I always tell aspiring doctors to get your chemical engineering degree then maybe the first year of med school and see what the political climate is. If the govt is trying some shenanigans to tank pay then just go be an engineer. Nothing worse than having 6 figure debt and your own people are trying to make it so you can never pay them back and buy an over inflated priced home in those areas.

Shenanigans being H1B visas, tweaks to the requirements to practice medicine, tweaks to any barrieries to entry, price fixing (which is what obama care does), etc.

Apparently there is a Doctor shortage in Anchorage so patients are being sent to Juneau and Fairbanks for treatment. Granted this is a shortage of Psych doctors and the patients are involuntarily committed.

Not against a Doctor or any professional making a living... However, when you pay $25k-$30k a year for family health insurance, you sorta expect to not have a $300 (or more) bill when you go to a doctor's office after insurance, for an office visit. I have some office visits where the bill is over $1000... No tests, just an office visit with the doctor...

The other issue is student loans are not tax deductable once you make over like 80k which is not very much for a degreed professional in a stem field.

IF the govt in conjunction with universties were not trying to activly screw doctors and students we would not be having these issues. Alot of doctors like engineers love what they do and they could afford to charge 50$ for an office visit and 50$ to write a prescription if they were not being fleeced from every direction.

We have a lay about society that tries to leach on to any and every gravy train they can find even though they bring little to the table. A great number of americans are parasites.

Yes, and when you consider Haines, Skagway, Gustavus, Hoonah, Angoon are all fairly close to Juneau, it's not a bad option for much of SE. Most, actually, considering Juneau itself comprises a big percentage of the region's population.
