Well hopefully I'll get a chance to glimpse a tiny part of it this time around. I need to plan out the next trip too.

What's going on with this "gold rush" in Girdwood? My wife's been asking me if we're going to be near any of the creeks & streams where fortunes are being made.

I don't know why you're lecturing me. Frankly, I have no idea what this red pill blue pill thing is all about... never watched the matrix, never will.
I am comfortable in my political beliefs, and I don't like other people's force fed down my throat as "breakfast"... I think you'll find that is how we do it in Alaska.

Welcome the Ak forum. It's perfectly fine to have one...maybe two political threads in my opinion. Especially if it pertains to the state. You start in on illegals entering Texas...then thats a different matter for a different forum. Seeing as it's close to presidential election it's only proper to have a thread on politics of it all.
Just watch out for that manmountain guy. He get's a little carried away with sheep and bullets! I think I'll go watch some tv and relax!

There isn't anything like Alaskan politics. I spent some time with a visitor from Scotland this week. It was all very interesting and entertaining to him.

I guess other places must have the complete spectrum that we have. But maybe because we have such a small population it seems more concentrated here.

Also, it seems that most of us, (except Rance), are plenty willing to have our say and let the chips fall. I kind of enjoy it myself.

Maybe its a fool's dream, or my medication shouldn't be combined with alcohol,
Okay, I'll give you "beautiful place to live" and "more 2nd Amendment rights than 90% of the rest of the country" and "people that actually give a damn about themselves and their neighbors", but you are WAY off base with "small government."

Per capita, Alaska has the largest government in the Union, and probably the planet. As of July 1, 2007, the Bureau of the Census estimates Alaska's population at 683,478. Alaska's operating budget for FY2007 was $5,142,986,000 (http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/07_OM...ratingBill.pdf) and the capital budget was $1,836,325,966 (http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/07_OM...pital_bill.pdf) which gave us a total budget of $6,979,311,966 or $10,211.47 for every man, woman, and child in the state. If the oil royalties didn't pay for 85% of the state budget, we would be completely and utterly bankrupt. Our state government is so large, we literally can't afford it without the oil royalties.

The really ridiculous part of it is that it's probably the most corrupt too. Seems like these days our legislators are selling out for tiny sums of money just to be a part of the game that is bribes....

I truly do not understand how he got elected TWICE! Sure, once because the country is entitled to a mistake, thought he had his father's common sense (didn't vote for the father either, but, he really wasn't a bad president) I boggles my mind that the country elected twice anyone who looks that much like Alfred E. Neuman. He proved to us in his first term that my dog has more analytical prowess. I have a sixteen year old niece, a prodigy, national merit scholar, et al, she has a really good grip on events, both foreign and domestic and their impact upon the U.S. Economy (she's also quite cute, suspect this makes her genuinely dangerous) Anyway, Dubya and all his high priced experts are (that we are paying for) running the economy into the ground, excuse me, have already.... Eight years ago when he took office, we were not involved in an armed conflict, our allies respected us, the economy was not only sound but booming, and everyone who wanted one, had a job. Just goes to show what one determined idiot can do. It is particularly frustrating for me, I am out of work, have been out of work for several months. I am university educated, a proven manager with high efficiency ratings, speak several languages, have a track record of completing projects ahead of schedule and under budget under the most adverse of conditions (W. Africa, C. and S. America) and I can not find work. I send out resumes and fill out applications daily and have used more gas than we can afford. Were it not for my gardening and hunting skills we would be hungry. Did I mention frustration?

I'll never believe that he was...elected (in the proper sense of the word) twice.
