You won't get to see much for animals on a cruiseship. I think May or June would be good whale viewing tho. There will be alot of seals, otters, sea birds as well. If you cruise up and fly home, you could take the train from Seward to Anchorage, and maybe get a chance of seeing some black bear and moose along the route.

In Fairbanks, you are pretty much stuck there. Out in the middle, all by your lonesome. And about those harsh Fairbanks winters...there are parking lots with plug ins for your car. That right there would tell me...no way no day!
Glad to know. I was considering Fairbanks but looking at the weather lately, BRRRR. Wow, plug ins in the parking lot.

Guess I'll continue looking further south.

Don't get your hopes up. It's been near zero or less for about 4-5 weeks straight around and south of Anchorage! When it get's -20° or worse, it really does not matter where you are. It's just cold.

Near zero, not too bad. It's been in the 20's here at night. Here is the cabin that I lived in about 10 years ago here.... Real simple, was @ 16x16, and the inside looks just like the outside. We only had a kero heater for heat, I remember many a nights heating up water for the hot water bottle and sleeping in my coat until it warmed up.

Yeah but wasn't it great! You'll never forget or regret it. I "homesteaded" for a year with no power, no running water, etc. Just oil lamps for light and a wood stove to heat and cook. And with a newborn baby to boot. I also had very little bills to worry about. I did cheat a little and had a small generator to run the toaster and TV on occasion. Having to use an unheated outhouse in 20 to 30 below was no fun, but I could do it all over again.

The really one important thing to remember when living in a colder climate...is to not stick your tongue to anything metal!

No I sure don't. If it had made it up to the 64 earthquake...chances are it was destroyed at that time.
