What other kind of weather does Alaska get?
I haven't experienced a good ground-shaking T-storm since I left PA. Does AK get those kind of storms? And boy, it looks like it's been cold up there. I assume that this is more of an anomaly than an every winter thing? Or am I just being another clueless lower 48'er?

All depends on where in Alaska you are. For example, -25 to -45 is just about normal in Fairbanks in January and February, then 80-degree and higher during the summer months is common. But sometimes it rains quite a lot during the summer, so it depends.
Fairbanks is not the coldest place in Alaska. For example, while it has been around -45 in Fairbanks (at night), it has been around -69 by Toke. Also, while it may be -45 at night, during the day the sun raises the ambient temperature from 15 to 25 degrees, and that's how it was around -20 degrees this afternoon. It's supposed to drop to around -40 degrees tonight.

I knew Fairbanks experienced some serious extremes but we'll be settling somewhere in the Anchorage or Wasilla/Palmer area. It doesn't quite get that cold in PA (understatement implied) but I'm not the least bit concerned.

Alaska does get some good thunder storms
I remember sitting in Palmer waiting the examiner to show up, and watching lightning, and hearing some good booms. Also heard some good booms over the engine while going T and Gs in Birchwood.
What is really fun is to get thunderstorms in Haines. It just echoes up and down the valley with a deep low rumble.

That makes me happy. I haven't experienced one decent T-storm since I moved to this socialist cesspool.
This is just another reason that I want to get the hell out of San Jose ASAP. Taxes and housing prices are insanely high, a large proportion of the population doesn't speak English and apparently has no intention of trying, and if I see one more HILLARY '08 sign I will definitely throw up. Other than that, I like San Jose just fine.

The 5.6 that shook the entire Bay Area was epi-centered just 9 miles from my house. I've learned about quakes. Quite fun actually.

And, as one of the most Geologically active areas on the face of the planet, Volcanos are not out of the question either. (does Pacific Rim strike a familiar note?) It's what ya get when ya build a big part of a continent on shifty plates.
