Thanks for posting. Those prices really aren't that bad compared to the lower 48. Given all of the talk of high grocery prices in Alaska, I was pleasantly surprised the two times I have visited. Granted, both times were on the road network.

Are the prices in a place like Cordova significantly lower than Bethel or Barrow? All three are off the road network, but Cordova is significantly closer by air and ship. Is that distance from Anchorage what gives the bush communities the eye-watering prices?

I think that Cordova can get things shipped by barge which is significantly less than air. Barging prices are usually determined by volume instead of weight. Valdez can be trucked or barge. Even prices in western coast areas (Bethel, Nome) are cheaper than interior villages because of being able to use larger planes (less cost per piece).
