Another factor to consider is that the days get VERY short in winter, like maybe five or six hours of sunlight around late Nov. through the end of Jan. or so. The further north you go the worse it gets, but most people live far enough south to get at least SOME daylight. It gets old for just about everyone, but it really hits some folks harder than others and it seems like most of those are women. It's called SAD...seasonal affective disorder.
I'll second the recommendation that SE Alaska is a nice place to live, but good jobs are getting harder and harder to come by. Having your wife as an RN is a big plus, almost every hospital and clinic in the state seems to be looking for help. You might want to look up Alaska Power and Telephone in SE AK, and Chugach Electric in SouthCentral. |

I actually did better with the dark thing when I was up North. We might have a little more daylight here but it isn't quality light. I'm going to spend the spring and summer in Montana so I can get some sun.

Check out Central Peninsula General Hospital
CPGH Home also the state of alaska web site has job seeker info I personally would not dream of raising my kids any where else. After living in Valencia, CA for a year or so I was thankful to come back to Alaska. There are pro's & con's, as with anywhere. It just depends on what is considered to be a "deal breaker" to you. I like the fact that if you go off the road, hit a moose or just have car trouble people actually stop. And after you have lived here a while chances are you know them! There is considerable security in the fact that there is just "one road". If someone were to snatch you car or god forbid your child, there is just no where to run. Not that there are not crazy people because there are, but they are usually harmless. |
