Default We have arrived, and settling in at Eielson

Hello,

We have completed our move to Eielson AFB. We got here on the 4th of January and it was about -30. The day we moved into our house on base it was -40. But, we are getting used to it, and we love it so far. We got our Iphones through AT&T and really no complaints as far as coverage yet. My daughters are in school on base, and the schools here are a far cry better than our previous home (Honolulu HI) We have done our WalMart run, joined Sam's club, and checked out Barnes and Noble.

Stil looking for ideas for weekend family trips in town, and good restaurants. So, send them to me if you have any suggestions.

Thanks for all of your hospitality

John

Hats off to Ya John. God job. Check out your neighorhood and the hockey scene at the center. Feed the family well first off and go from there.

You should feel proud.

Did you have a chance to see the start of the Yukon Quest, and the mushers/dog teams going through North Pole? If so, you still have a chance to see them coming back next year. The Yukon Quest started in Fairbanks, and will and at White Horse this year. Next year it will start at White Horse, and end in Fairbanks. However, I always watch them as they travel through the Chena Recreation Area in North Pole, along the road to the dam of the flood project.

If you have a good set of studded tires (not always needed, but...), keep your eyes on the Chatanika Outhouse Race. It's quite funny. The race takes place at Chatanika (off the Steese Highway), sometime in March, I believe. It consists of a downhill race of weird-looking outhouses, powered by people on foot. Some of these "footpower" is comprised of University students, local businesses' employees, or just anybody who wants to push the outhouses down the hill, with the driver sitting on the toilet steering the thing Lots of fun!

If you are into snowmobiling, I believe the Teroro Iron Dog was taking place this week. This is a very long snowmobile race. There is also a famous snowmobile race, and all sorts of things taking place at Summit Lake sometime in March or early April (you will have to look at the schedule). During the summer, the Yukon 800 takes place. It's an 800-mile speed-boat race to the Yukon and back:
Yukon 800

Take a look at the schedule of events here:
Fairbanks Summer Attractions

If you are into the best fillet of mignon in town, then the place is called "The Valatta (something like that) Restaurant by Goldstream Road. The same link above lists restaurants:

A friend and I went in to the ATT place to check out those crazy iPhones. The place was packed...! 'Nee way, I saw that the iPhone they had on display was a working model, so I starting making calls and stuff. Then I noticed it was plugged into the wall, so I was like "wtf! Is it not actually wireless?" I unplugged it and set off an alarm. They kicked me out.

Welcome to Alaska!

What in the freakin' hell is an Iphone? Should I get one? I've been thinking about getting a phone but I hate phones. Will the stupid thing work when I travel out of state?

Pikes Landing is good, as is the Pump House. I like breakfast at Family's on Airport Way.

iPhones are ridiculously overpriced minicomputers that also happen to have phones in them. No buttons, just a large touch screen.

iPod, telephone, and a minicomputer. I see quite a lot of students buying them, and it seems that in every TV movie or series somebody is using an iPhone. My boss, a hardcore PC user, brought one to work a few weeks ago. He is going bananas over the iPhone, and told me that he "may want to give a Macbook Pro a try."

People tell me that, but I don't believe them. I can be a good little girl when I want to... I just don't want to!
