They either increase or decrease stress along the subduction zone... depends on the type of earthquake it is.

Haha, good answer!! I had to rewrite my response a few times. It's complicated! Finally I went with the KISS theory: Keep It Simple, Stupid!

I have to give props to the person who asked the question... on the right track. Most people who aren't rock lickers don't give plate tectonics a second thought.

Rumor has it, that Nibiru (planet X) is coming at us (planet earth) and it is going to cause all sorts of volcanic and seismic activity. Which it appears to already be happening.

Uh oh, you said the magic words. Bar rules are that we don't discuss religion or politics, and climate change has recently been added to that short list because it has departed the world of scientific fact and has landed firmly in the realm of opinion... and politics, with some more opinion on top!

The theory, as I recall it, is that these quakes release pressure, thus, preventing a massive build up and subsequent massive quake. I like to think it is a legit theory.
