I was actually hopeful that this thread might evolve into some discussion of arithmetic, .....alas, hard science seems to have little interest.
Hypothetical exercises in banality appear to rule what curiosity there may be around here..... (...well, that and some little valid interest in delectable pie.) . .. |

User2, as you well know, math is not my forte.
I have a recipe for pear/butterscotch pie that is to die for, though. It's quite easy, really. You basically take a Mennonite apple pie recipe and omit the particular apple pie spices except for cinnamon...instead use vanilla and perhaps just a bit of ginger, maybe not. And then instead of pouring whipped cream over it prior to baking, make butterscotch on the stove and use that. Some kind of crumb topping of course. |

I'd go further than to just recommend it for kids in school, though. I'd suggest that everyone keep trying to learn as much about math as they can. No reason to limit it to just some kids in school. . .. |

Well paying frickin attention and walking out of school with some basic knowledge makes a hell of a difference. Then you won't struggle like I did when it came time to use formulas for well control, pipe tallies, drilling fluids, or even reading and understanding a damn tape measure. I was figuring on commercial fishing all my life. Hell no...the first thing I did was join the army and get into firing data which was all math.
Then into construction which was...more math. But when I hit the oilfeild...holy smokes...I kicked myself in the rear for days for not paying more attention in math class. And I never took algebra or geometry. So yes kids...stay in school and learn some math. Your gonna need it!

OK, user 2. Pretend like you are making a basic apple pie. Use lard or black bear grease in your crust. It makes me really really mad when people do not make a proper crust. When making fruit pies, the less ingredients the better for the crust and the hell with all the martha stewart like fancy ass crap. The objective is to bring out the best in the flavor of the fruit. So--pretend like you are making a dutch apple pie only use pears. Omit all seasonings except for cinnamon and just the slightest bit of ginger and toss the cut up pears in brown sugar and vanilla. Then put them in your properly prepared pie crust. Put about a cup of butterscotch that you make on the stove over the pie. Use a crumb crust on the top. Toss some bread crumbs, brown sugar, and butter together and sprinkle over the top. Then bake the thing. 375 or so for ten minutes then lower to 350 until it is done. |

I didn't say it was a bad idea for kids to concentrate on their math and seek to learn all they can while they can, I just said it's good advice, in similar respects, for all of us even after we leave 'school'. I have to assume you are still learning, (even if it is 'as you go').... I just think that's a good thing for all of us to keep attempting to do. . .. |

If you're making pie crust, and you're not using lard, (which is pig fat), one has to be making use of another substitute. I like lard pie dough. It's a preference...... I'm not a fan of plasticized Crisco, bear fat, beef tallow, or vegetable fats for pie dough. There are some very good butter pie doughs, but that's not really comparable to lard dough. Your pie sounds great, I'll undoubtedly try a pear pie like that, although it will be a long time before I can find suitable pears for a pie. I do have berries in the freezer, and I'm going to have to suffer with currants, blueberries, rasberries, strawberries, gooseberries, and cranberries for the immediate future. . .. Pie dough, ....some lard, some unbleached flour, some pastry flour, a bit of seasalt, and a little water. That's dough to me. . .. |
