Addy23 is on a distinguished road
I have lived in alaska for about 20 years on and off my dad lives in montana which in my eyes sucks even more. I can't wait to get out of this state it is so depressing. Not just the winters but the summers suck. I miss the sun so bad. I wanna be able to take my kids to the park and maybe get a little sun and not have to wear a fricken coat. I would say for your friend only being up here a year ya go for it that wouldn't be too bad but for a life time hell no. I am trying to move to cali right now and just trying to ship our stuff and our cars is so expensive i feel like we live in another country up here. I hope this answers your question......

Well hopefully it will be in the future.

You know, when it's cold you can add more layers to stay warm. When it's hot out, there's only so much you can take off.

You don't know what you have in Alaska until you leave it. Life is so much easier there....I miss home so much!
FYI to the lady whose friend is thinking of moving to AK....make sure she knows that in Fairbanks in the winter it can easily be -40 frequently. Anchorage will not be quite as extreme.

Being as I'm not from here, I would say if you're from someplace else, you don't know what you have in the lower 48 until you move here. I do not think life is easier here at all! I live in Fairbanks, in town. I don't have to haul water or chop wood like a lot of people do. But I think the winters here are so exhausting that I've never lived in a place that was so hard to just live day to day life. If the darkness gets to you, which it really gets to me, this place will be the most difficult place you could possibly live - except maybe our sister city of Yakutsk.

Well...I just got through spending the summer in Southcentral Oregon and I don't think I ever want to leave it, even for AK; it's not an either/or choice with me, though, as I intend on continuing to enjoy the best of both worlds.

I think some people just pysiologically (I spelled that wrong, wth) need the sun more than others. I don't think I could ever live in a hot place that was sunny all year around--I like the storms we have here too--but...winter is not my favorite season anywhere and it's too damn long anymore for me up there. I need to see things growing, I guess.

I wish the winter wasn't so long here. We have had snow since the beginning of October. And I have been told it will stick around until April/May. I did love the summer here!
I think once things get better financially for us I will be happier here and more relaxed. That and when the garden is supplying alot of our food

I recall being quite starved for the sight of anything green (besides weed) around the middle of May a few years ago.

Once the trees do start to green up, though, it all happens so incredibly fast.
