Anchorage might have the most job opportunities...but also has the punk gang thing. I'm sure you'd be safe enough if you steer clear of that crowd...and darn near any other town will be safe enough. There is work...but you might have to take a low paying job until you meet some folks and beat the streets finding something better.

Default Alaskan froze in Boston

Well let me put it this way. I am originally from Boston. I married a woman up here that has lived her whole life @ 50 below zero, living n the upper regions of the Arctic.

I took this woman to Boston.. it was 30 degrees ABOVE ZERO.

wearing her Eskimo Parky.. she froze ! she could not take the cold !
Yeah that's funny. Kinda like living in Maine , then going to my brother's house for a visit at Christmas time in South Carolina. Ayuh, froze at night with 30 degrees, then over heated during the day with 65. It was not like the dry cold in Maine, where you can wake up in the morning after a clipper came though with 4 in snow on your car and with a good set of lungs and a deep breath, blow the stuff off. In S.C. the cold got into ya bones, and would not leave till the sun hit cha.
