Oh yes, I lived in the Bronx, but worked in Manhattan for awhile.
There is a big difference from Squarebanks to Los Anchorage. Anchorage is a much larger city, but the weather is milder than Fairbanks during the winter. Fairbanks is much warmer during the summer months, however. The University is smaller in Anchorage than it is in Fairbanks. I haven't been in Anchorage for a long time, but I believe that their public bus system is much better than the one in Fairbanks. To move around Fairbanks, more than likely you need an automobile. Since Anchorage is a much larger city, there are more people, restaurants, malls (more public buildings and things) in there than in Fairbanks. The weather in the interior (Fairbanks), is much a sort of desert-like. Very dry and cold during the winter months (dries your skin more), and not as dry during the summer, but dryer than in Anchorage. Anchorage is more of a metropolitan city, while Fairbanks is more of a sort of frontier-like town.

HUGE difference between Anchorage and Fairbanks!!!
Fairbanks is a totally different deal. Their winters are harsher than Anchorage, there is less to do (re: entertainment, shopping, dining out, and the like), and it is nearly always dark during the winter months (dec-feb).
However, their summers are warmer, the people are nicer, and it's not as fast paced as Anchorage. And, yes, the hot springs rock!
But if you have a choice, choose Anchorage, or the Penninsula. Either way, Alaska is a good experience for anyone, and anywhere in the state will give you a sense of adventure. Just find a few productive hobbies to get you through the winters and spend your entire 3 month summer OUTSIDE.

My daughter was born and raised in Alaska, and is now in NYC. She hates it. She says there's a stigma attached to being from Alaska, but she hasn't yet been able to define it, just says it's there, and people 'make allowances' for her! Soon as she's done with school, she's leaving. And she says the subways suck.

That sounds horrible--living in NYC. I hope that your daughter gets to leave soon, karibear.
My son is in college in a different part of the country and he says that being from Alaska is perceived as "cool". He found the same attitude in Europe.

When I was running through the 5 northwest states (AK, ID, MT, OR and WA) and 3 western provinces for a power systems company, I lived in Mt. Vernon in WA. I was laid off, and took a job up here with another power systems company. The severance package was great and I paid bills and moved up. 2 weeks later, the (nameless) company that laid me off called me and asked if I would come back and move to NYC or DC.
Common decency prevented me from explaining exactly where they could place their offer, so I politely declined this stellar opportunity, explaining that my boys were growing up without the benefit of big city life in their teenage years.
We spent time in Chicago, because my family lives there. Don't mind visits, they're fun in so many ways. Can't live there. Not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent.

I lived my whole life here in SW Ak, love it. The prices lately for everything has gone up. I don't think I'd live in any large city though.
