I love it here. The only other place I could live would have to be Sweden. Maybe Norway.

My son is in college in a different part of the country and he says that being from Alaska is perceived as "cool". He found the same attitude in Europe.

She went there with her SO and decided to finish college there. She has another year to go, but the SO thinks NYC is heaven on earth. I rather think they'll split if he doesn't get over it by the time she graduates. She spent over 10 years in the deep south, where her father lives, and she said the southern men were a lot more tolerant and accepting of capable women than the men in NYC. My son, on the other hand, is a commercial fisherman and has never done anything that would take him out of state for anything other than a vacation, or to bring a boat back north.

I love the sense of liberty and neighborliness in my area of Fairbanks. It kills me to have to move away.
Not many other places can you still leave your house unlocked.
Not many other places will people go out of their way to help you in a time of misfortune.
My MIL came to visit last summer and I thought it was funny that she ran around compulsively locking all the doors before she went to bed every night, (I barely even know which one is my house key, it gets used so infrequently!) but that's how people live down in the lower 48 now, I suppose.
How do y'all stand to live down there in constant fear of your so-called "neighbors?"
I guess to me, I don't mind taking a couple weeks of really hard-bitten temperatures if that's the trade-off for living in liberty. And after a week of -40, anything warmer feels pretty reasonable. I was out raking chicken poop at 30F today in a tank top, and it felt GREAT.
Anyway, Anchorage is a whole nother story. LOL.

A couple of differences from NYC and anywhere in Alaska I forgot to mention:
a. You can clearly see the starts at night in Alaska, and during the day the clouds look nice and white, clear skies.
b. One of the first things you notice when you land in Alaska is the nice and fresh air. The air smells in NYC, and it's one of the first things I notice when I go there.

The media down here reinforces a climate of fear with multiple stories about home invasions. But I've left my house unlocked & my wife has left her keys in the front door overnight with no unfortunate results.

If she's going to Fairbanks and spending the winter, tell her to get a block heater for her car,,,FIRST THING,,she will need it there in winter.
I have a question for you without sounding "bashing".
Why the heck would anyone even want to live in NYC?.
I have been there and have always wondered that.I mean,,burglar bars on 10th floor windows.
I have dogs that can't strip a beef bone as fast as those people can strip a car.Geeezzzz,WHY.
Let me know,I really am curious
