I was raised in NYC and lived there most of my life. You do get used to it and it is like no other place. It is definitely an experience and you wouldn't know it unless you've lived someplace else - before or after.

She is going to Hunter, and doesn't live too far away from it, I think. As for getting used to it, well, people can get used to all kinds of things. Doesn't mean they have to like them, though. Cities are not my thing - or hers, either. Not that I don't enjoy a brief visit once in awhile, I just couldn't live in one.

So my question is - how is Juneau? I'm use to a very big city and I'm sure even Anchorage would feel great to me. But could anyone tell me more about Juneau and how it like to live there?

Here's what I want you to do: run a search for Juneau on the forum search function, and read every post you can by me (Xa'at), DannyL, and cobolt. Then, you can pm me any particular questions you have, mmkay?

This is where I am. You just said what I think.
I live in Ohio and I am absolutely sick to death of PEOPLE.
Don't get me wrong. I am not a sociopath, but where's the PEACE?
It seems a person can't even turn around without bumping into someone. There's no privacy. You can't do ANYTHING without somebody else's by-your-leave.
It never used to be like that here. I suppose we've always been well populated here but heck. I used to be able to hop in the car and go groundhog hunting all day, or fishing on private property without a single care. Nowadays you can get arrested for it.
It seems like a person can't do much of anything anymore without somebody else sticking his nose where it doesn't belong.
It's hard to be sociable and friendly when you have people crammed up yer butt 24/7....
I used to keep a few hogs and chickens. I learned early on that you can't put too many in a single enclosure. Even with plenty of food and water if you crowd them too much you will get aggression and injuries. It just doesn't work. I think people are the same way. If you put too many of them in one spot they start becoming aggressive.
Something else that's REALLY getting on my nerves is stupidity. I swear I must be turning into a bonafide genius because the older I get the STUPIDER people seem to be.
Just look at what most people think is important....stupid tv shows...stupid toys....STUFF.........it's all vanity and chasing after wind.

Alaska is just the most wonderful place to live. Is it cold here?
Well let me put it this way. I am originally from Boston. I married a woman up here that has lived her whole life @ 50 below zero, living n the upper regions of the Arctic.
I took this woman to Boston.. it was 30 degrees ABOVE ZERO.
wearing her Eskimo Parky.. she froze ! she could not take the cold !

Sounds like NYC and Alaska attract all sorts of people who don't fit in anywhere else!
Smalltown America can be a pretty brutal place, with nosy neighbors always making sure you don't get too big for yer britches. If you don't look a certain way and talk a certain way, you don't have a whole lot of prospects, from what I've seen out there. I've lived here and there and been through 47 of the lower 48, despite having lived more than half of my life in NYC.
I get the sense that in AK as in NYC, all sorts of people can find a niche. There you've got natural grandeur to the extreme, here, it's the human landscape that's outsized. There's a sense of liberty in both ... but here it's more in the sense you are free to be left the hell alone and do or say what you think ... anonymity, that is.
Have yet to find my way to AK ... but travel vicariously through these threads. Don't mind da cold and slapping on a balaclava and snowshoes or going sledding under the full moon (that would be upstate, not in Central Park, mind you) but kind of like it being over by March, I've got to admit.
My question would be, do you feel the need to carry a Dirty Harry special when you're out up there (nevermind, just read the weapons thread!) ... a hungry or bored griz is the only thing I'd worry too much about, I suppose.

Let me put it this way & into the proper perspective.
God just loves crazy people .. . he made so many of them.
ALL OVER THE ENTIRE PLANET is not restricted to any one particular area or state(s).
I hope you take that adivce with a big smile such as I have.!! just a little humor.!!
what do you think happens when you put 29 eskimo women into one room at once ?

Majik, it took me a minute. Then I figured it out. You married into the community. A few of the guys I worked with at Public Safety in Barrow did the same thing back in the 80's.
They are still there too. Congratulations on your longevity. May you and yours enjoy many more years in a land that most people will never see!
