How do you guys live in alaska???
THIS IS NOT A BASHING THREAD.
I live in new york city, and I realize it takes a certain type of person
to live here..the same I believe accounts for any place, including alaska.
But ofcourse my curiosity caused me to start this thread because I really
want to know how you make do with the winters, etc.etc It gets cold in
nyc, but nothing i bet like alaska. what do you think the cons and pros are
of living in alaska? One of my closest friends is thinking of spending a year
there with her company and asked me if I knew anything, and ofcourse me
never having gone there had nothing to say, so hoping to learn more
Thanks guys

It gets cold here? New to me. You just live life without thinking too much. How do you handle the big city? I don't think I could do that.

You adapt and if you like it you stay and if not, most leave after the first winter. Alaska is beautiful, the biggest problem is too many people moving here and crowding Anchorage and the Valley to be perfectly blunt. Not being sarcastic, just honest. When it's cold we bundle up and deal with it. We do have long winters and short summers. Where is your friend planning on living if she comes here? That will make alot of difference because different parts of Alaska have more extreme weather.

It's really quite simple, some people can hack it, some can't.
Those who can't, usually don't find that out until after they move here.
Alaska is such a big place, that some areas are not at all like others,
...that said, ..there's probably not any of the state that's much like New York's climate.
Either you enjoy winter, or you don't....
Me, I don't 'make do', ........I enjoy winter, ...in more ways than one.
If winters weren't as harsh as they can be, way too many people would be tempted to come up here, ...we're at, or above the carrying capacity of much of our resources now,
...if the weather wasn't tempering factor limiting population growth, ...we'd only have more problems than we do already.
I'm hoping for more and harsher winters.....
I'm both a proponent, and unabashedly admitted admirer of the many benefits of natural selection.....

if your down around anchorage you wont complain about cold weather too much :P its like living in a whole different country compared to the interior.

as for food, i hope you enjoy $7 for a grilled cheese sandwich :P a cheese burger is the same price
finding some thing locally can be a pain and shipping gets pricey too

Anchorage is milder, and a step closer to Alaska (from Seattle)
Long ago I lived in the Bronx, NY and can tell you some of the differences:
a. You don't have to worry as much to have your car stolen in Alaska, and depending on where you live up here, the front door in your house can be unlocked while you are a home.
b. You don't need double locks on your doors, nor a locking bar on the door.
c. You don't need to wear suits and ties, nor fancy dresses if you don't want to.
d. You don't have to worry about being mugged the soonest you step out of the house.
e. If you are waiting for the traffic light to change, and your arm is by the open window of your car, you don't have to worry about a mugger snatching your watch from your wrist, nor having the ring pulled off your finger.
d. You will have a sense of safety when walking on the street like you have never experienced before. It's not always safe, but...(read "e" below)
e. You won't have to use the window glass of the stores by the sidewalk-to keep an eye on possible muggers.
f. You won't here the sort-of-robotic word "NEXT" when paying the clerk at the supermarket, and if that word is spoken, it won't sound rude. More than likely the clerk will politely thank you after you pay.
g. More than likely strangers on the street will make eye contact, or even say "hello" to you.
h. You won't have to meander through a crowded sidewalk like in NYC during the rush hour. In fact, you will hardly see people on the sidewalk most times, since most people drive up here.

Ha well the Bronx and Manhattan differ greatly, trust me I've spent a good portion in both. She's either staying in Anchorage, or Fairbanks. She's shooting more for Fairbanks I think..but doubt she knows if there really is a difference..is there?
