I was thinking the same thing. I'd be hoping that the animals would leave me alone till I was dead though.

Well, maybe you have a point. I have heard that when one freezes it can me quite peaceful as one falls asleep.

I spend time out there hunting in September, but never alone. My tent is not too far from my hunting partner's tent. I like to sleep alone in my wall tent, since he snores too loudly

hey, who was that guy who moved out to a bus with 50lbs of rice and some hunting gear... I've heard about it, but don't know the details. Aside from him beind dead now, of course.

ETA: oh, according to Wiki lore, his name was Chris McCandless. Might have died of starvation, or poisoning from the seeds of Eskimo potatoes. hmm.
Yes, these things have happened forever in Alaska. Some women give it a try, too. On Sunday's News Miner (Fairbanks paper), there are two sisters who write stories about their lives in the wilderness. Their stories are quite interesting, since they hunt, trap, and the rest of manly stuff.

What were you hunting? Did you have a problem with the cold temperatures and your gun jamming up ever?

Ray in AK, do you have a link to that story? I looked for it on the News-Miner website but couldn't find it...

Well,I lived the Alaska bush life, and while I didn't like being away from civilization that long, most people, and I do mean most that I personally know or even met, definately have emotional disorders, some good, some bad,LOL,and to the point that DR. Phil couldn't help them in one or even two episodes.
Funny thing tho, they are all great people that I have and would trust my life to in the bush. They can just be embarrassing in public,LOL.
Good Luck

They aren't bizarre, they are normal - from my POV. As far as I know, there aren't any year round cabins via the Park Service, in fact, if they find someone living on park land, they evict them. The homesteading laws have more or less vanished now. You can still buy from old-timers who have proved up and gotten their deeds, but that's about it. There is/was a website for land and real estate for sale all over Alaska, excluding Mat Valley, and most of the places had photos. I haven't looked at it for several years, though.

A lot of the people you find really out in the middle of nowhere now are Vietnam vets, they used to hide out in the WA Cascades, but I think it got too crowded and they started moving on. And there were some who went straight to Alaska in the first place - so if you decide you want to visit someone, be VERY sure you know who it is you're going to visit, or you may not like the reception you get.

One of the first accounts of homesteading I read was written by a woman who homesteaded on the Kenai right after WW II. It was called Homesteading Granny, or something equally cutesy, but she described how she and her pregnant daughter built their place, cleared, planted, etc, and proved it up. Fascinating story, actually, and the worst problems she had were with some of the men who were sure they knew best and kept trying to dismantle things and redo them. The one I remember best was some twit who offered to bring some of their stuff from Homer to the beach near them, so she gave him a detailed list of what she needed from their storage barn. He brought everything BUT. And when he got back up the Inlet, he didn't bother tieing the skiff up to anything, because he was sure the tide wouldn't really come up that far! They got down to the beach in time to watch it all float away.

Does wanting to be alone in the wilderness for long periods of time mean you have an emotional disorder? I personally think Dr Phil and his wife have some serious issues. They probably have to meet with Howard Stern once a week for relationship counseling!
