Here is the cabin for you if you really want to live in the wilderness. It's surrouned by Gates of the Arctic National Park. Here is the craigslist link (broken link)
I don't know anything about it...except that I have tromped around some of that country.

I say go for it to those who want, and tell us 6 months later all about it.

Thanks Marty! That does look quite impressive! Especially the price! Actually the more research I do the more I am leaning towards Nanavut, which is one of Canada's furtherest north east territory. I am discovering from prior experience and from what many are telling me that Alaska and for that matter most of the western territories will contain a tremendous insect problem during the summer months, whereas Nanavut is cold most of the year with little on the insect side. I could be wrong but I also have learned the fishing and ice fishing up there is awesome and there are no restrictions on seal hunting. Never did seal hunting either and it sounds fun.
Still researching all of this. But so much thanks for everyone's input!

It is routine up here
Stories of people "dropping out" are very common up here. In fact, the "end of the roaders" gravitate to Alaska. Unfortunately, the criminally insane are in that group. Alaska is a magnet for "individuals".
Tell you a story, true one. I came up here in 87 when there was a job opening in Fairbanks, moved from the NW. Worked for a computer company. The guy who quit in Fairbanks told the company he would work for them in Fbx. 5 years, no more. He quit, dropped out, went up into the Yukon Charley country in the wilderness, with a dog team, and got dropped off by a plane. A certain time later the plane was supposed to reprovision him in the winter, but never showed up. He had a rough time, eating squirrels, rabbits, whatever. One day he was splitting firewood and his axe got him in the leg opening a big gash. He stitched himself back together with sewing stuff. During breakup, he came strolling into our office, with clothes so ragged not all his body parts were covered. He had a bear skull under one arm. Had his fill of the wilderness experience, and was going back to college back east to finish his degree. He did so, and hired on with IBM.
A common Alaska story. Sort of the same type of story as the McCandless guy. Back to the end of the roaders, every village has stories of a crazy white guy that went berserk, sometimes killing someone or several people. Manley, Ruby, McCarthy, I only know the ones in my neck of the woods. Extreme yes, but it happens.

This one is still standing. It looked like this when I moved here back in 68. Sits right on the river. Awesome view, good fishing, eagles, moose and bears. Sitting on state owned land now tho.
The view from the front porch.

I heard that about Nanavut also. Actually I have an Uncle who has fished and hunted up there and he did say it was good hunting and fishing because most people from the USA usually go to the west.
I applaud you Comet for even thinking about this. The idea of living alone totally with just you and Mother Nature is admirable, and I think just doing the research and preparation for your sojourn would be a lot of fun! The few people that I met who have done this said it was one of the most rewarding spiritual and growing experiences of their lives! Good luck to you!

Hi again Comet, I just found some info regarding fishing Nanavut. See below;
"Arctic Char are the hardest hitting, most dominant fish in the crystal clear waters of Nunavut. Fighting a 9 kg (20 lb) char on a fly or light tackle will take all your skill and patience. Char – both sea-run and freshwater – can be found virtually everywhere in Nunavut"

Thanks Sciamedia! Actually I was wondering also about ice fishing and seal hunting as well. Seems like Nunavut has many tour guides during the summer but I want to be there during the winter.

You may also want to check out this website regarding Igloo Construction. Depending of what part of the North territory you plan on living will determine what type of shelter you must have. Good Luck!
