Just a quick question, does anyone know if it's possible for someone who works in the IT field to find a job for the summer anywhere in Alaska? My long-time girlfriend and I would like to find a way to live in Alaska this summer, she would be looking for any sort of environmental or photography internship (her majors are Art/EnviroScience). I have a degree in MIS, about two years experience in UNIX(Solaris)/Win/Mac system management, Cisco Networking, and know enough to figure most other things out, if that helps. Are there typically jobs available like this? Where should I go about looking? I did check the Alaska Job Center Network.
Thanks in advance! |

You might try some of the drilling companies like BP or ConocoPhillips. They have a pretty good network etc. Or maybe the phone companies.

Was going to say phone companies. We had a worker for the morning five am shifts that worked for United Utilities as a IT guy from Minnesota. He said he might come back up again this summer. If we don't hire someone to replace me for a month, work is screwed. Looks like I'm taking a Alcan trip after the Euro trip!

Thank you for your responses everyone! I am supposed to start grad school this fall, but I'm thinking about deferring and spending a year in Alaska. So I'm open to suggestions for year-long employment as well. I will check the drilling and phone companies, thanks.

You may want to try AmeriCorps for paid internships. Most of the internships are with nonprofits and government agencies and there appears to be quite a few openings in all parts of Alaska (and nationwide). Their website is AmeriCorps.
