Absolutely..To second what Danny said, most hikers average between 3-5 days to complete the trail. The Golden Staircase is the real workout of the journey. You know those old pics you see of a line of stampeders with cargo strapped to their backs and hiking up an incline of about 45 degrees? Yeah...that's the Golden Staircase. And just when you think you're done with it, you're not. The trail is 33 miles from start at Dyea to Bennet. Then you can catch the White Pass railway back to Skagway if you like, and see the pass from a different point of view. I certainly don't think it's a trip for the faint-hearted.

Lots of really great trip reports and blogs of those who have done the trail.

I nice place to hike that is off the tourist-beaten path is in the Hatcher Pass portion of the Talkeetna Range. The few tourists who do manage to drive through Hatcher Pass don't wander too far from the road, so once you get a mile or two away from the road you will be alone.

Here are a list of a few hiking/biking trails in Hatcher Pass: http://www.nps.gov/aplic/hikingTrailsInHatcherPass.pdf

I don't know, only been down there once, to Sitka for a few days. There is a possible road trip after the Euro trip, a couple days afterwards. We're planning on a drive through Lake Okanagan Lake in BC and into Washington/Idaho/Wyoming/Montana/North Dakota/Minnesota. Would be cool to meet up with you down there.
