I guess I was thinking as opposed to taking the ferry? I have been told there is a ferry from Washington or Anchorage to Bethel. I am also gathering that bringing a car is not a great idea. How's come I can't find anything about any apartments in Bethel? Thanks for your info. I have tons of questions and will probably keep asking!

You can only fly to Bethel. There is no ferry system out here on the west end of Alaska. You have three choices of getting here. Alaska Airlines, Frontier Alaska, and ERA Aviation. You can check The Delta Discovery for listings on rentals. If you're a nurse, YKHC should have some apartments to rent. Just talk to the housing manager about them.

Wendy -- I have a friend who also was a nurse for several years in Bethel. She did a lot of traveling to other towns/villages in the general area and loved it. She went from being a Peace Corps Volunteer nurse in the Central African Republic to being a nurse in Bethel. She had LOTS of tales to tell! If I were younger, single, no kids, no dogs/cats and no debts, I'd love to do that. Oh, I'd also need to study to become a nurse, too . Best of luck to you. I hope you'll tell us how you're doing!

Warpt do you mean to tell me that no one has tried to develop any sort of passenger service by sea to Bethel? It sounds like a golden opportunity to me.

Good luck navigating the lower Kuskokwim River, full of sandbars. They bring shallow draft barges here to bring supplies up. In some years they have to offload barges down on the mouth to bring things up because of low water levels. This spring I don't see a problem with low water. As you can see by the pictures in the spring post, theres a lot of snow here and lots of runoff.

cmacf1-
well, my kids are grown (have grandkids tho) and I figure I am not getting any younger, so if I plan on going to alaska and running with the wolves, I'd better hop to it! I hope to learn alot and meet alot of great people. Just the logistics of getting there is a bit puzzling....

breezey 514,
Have you made the move to Bethel yet? I am getting ready to move up there in the next few months so any advice you could give would be great.

It does not seem you have been to bush Alaska. The rivers and sorrounding bodies of water are frozen for about 9-10 months of the year. So, the golden opportunity might work for about 2 months; which does for barges that bring goods to these remotes areas only when the ice breaks down.

I've never seen the ice around here frozen for 9-10 months out of the year. Where did you get this from? Its obvious who hasn't been here. Where did you get two months from? There are airplanes that bring in the goods year round, not only on the barges.
