made it to bethel
well, I have been in bethel for 2 weeks now and really like it. we drove up the alcan which was definately a wonderful trip...thanks for all who recommended it. i have started my job and met lots of nice people around town. the people here are very friendly and helpful. i love the laid back live and let live attitude here. no one dresses up and you always look dusty and windblown...my normal look anyway! Bethel is unique and amazing.

Lol, I was itching one of my many bites when I ran across this post. I've since purchased the industrial strength repellent with 90%+ DEET. Holy crapola, they are big and there's lots of them!

The bugs weren't so bad until this past weekend, they suddenly appeared out of nowhere. If you get out of the wind they're right on you. I think they bite you first and then land, I went to bed the other night and woke up with a big welt on my cheek, hated it.

That's one small advantage of living where I do. The neighbors have told me that the winds at our location are particularly bad, which sucks in winter but is a boon in summer because it keeps those damn bloodsuckers from draining a person.

The K-300 store sells these windjackets that have mesh over the head area to keep bugs away, i think they go for around $60~
The store is only open on Saturdays
